Free From Conformity is an analysis of the relationship between freedom and conformity in nature. Initially I was just interested in comparing nature's hidden expressions of conformance, in this case skeletal structure, against visible freedom of expression (colour, size, shape etc). While I was working on this image the riots in the Middle East had started, which made me think about how freedom and conformity play out against each other in modern society. This made me realise that the connection between freedom and conformity is a deep one that can be observed on many levels including the sociological. For this reason I added the blood to the image, as freedom is so often fought for when the rules become oppressive.

When viewed vertically, this image is of a sea plant growing towards the light at the surface. If seen horizontally then it is of a fish swimming away from the light and into the dark unknown. These contradicting view points help to balance out the subject and illustrate the desires caught up between these two forces.
